The Current United States Recession Research Paper
The Current United States Recession - Research Paper Example If the GDP decreases, it is a clear indication that the economy is performing dismally. Other indicators include national and personal income, and if these reduce, it is an indication of a recession. The retail sales reflect the purchasing power of consumers, so if there is a decline in retail sales, the country is likely to witness a recession. Evidence of a recession can be witnessed from a decline in government taxes due to the fact they are obtaining less taxable income and buying fewer goods that can be taxed. In the construction industry, the effects of the recession are felt when the sales of the houses drastically reduce. The construction industry is a segment of the financial system that is prone to recession. In the event a recession occurs it will be manifested in this industry. The purchasing power of consumers diminishes. The active growth seems to be slowed down near stagnation. Construction work therefore slows down due to the slump in the sales of the houses (Roubini, 2008). This in turn renders a lot of workers jobless. Expansionary fiscal policies have tried to limit the damage in conjunction with bailouts and government funds. With the recession, it is quite evident that the construction sector will face an extremely demanding task and it also threatens to limit any construction activity in the near future. Even despite the fact that the government is enthusiastic on prioritizing some of the infrastructure projects the spending cuts limit the job security for most of the construction workers. Additionally, the house building activity is likely to be restricted by the weak housing market activity and low house prices. The recession forces the prices of the houses to decline due to low purchasing power. In the society as a whole, the labor market is likely to decrease due to the lack of employment; consumer confidence is likely to diminish as they will be uncertain if they will be able to pay for the house once they are jobless (Cline, 2005). I nvestors in the construction industry are likely to pull out for fear of losing their money. Consumer spending is down to 4% since the recession began and the retail sales volumes have remained resilient. The recession has taken its toll on the labor market as the employment rate has fallen to 70%, which is much lower than in the previous quarter. The long term jobs are expected to be subdued. Apart from the public housing sector, the private sector also felt the effect of the decline on the economy. Due to the house price uncertainties and strict mortgage lending there has been a reduction in the sales. Buyer are opting for the ââ¬Å"wait and seeâ⬠approach to see if the prices can be reasonable. Objective 2 With reference to the business cycle, economic growth is not a steady phenomenon; rather it follows a specific pattern. These include an expansion of above average growth, a peak, a contraction of below average growth and a low point. The troughs are followed by periods o f expansion and the cycle generally repeats itself, though not in a usual manner (New York Times, 2010). The fluctuations in economic growth are regarded as the business cycle. The business cycle is related to the economic activity which is a popular indicator of the GDP. Economists generally consider two consecutive quarters of negative GDP growth to act as an

The notions of sentence, utterance and proposition Essay
The notions of sentence, utterance and proposition - Essay Example Affirmative sentences, questions, exclamatory comments, etc. are commonly being used. Similarly if we try to understand deliberately about language we will have to learn about various concepts of language. Sentence can be viewed as the basic thing which supports and keeps alive a language. The most popular definition of a sentence is 'the expression of a complete thought'. Any 'thought', can be further specified more precisely. It is reasonable to argue that utterances also always express 'thoughts'. A general theory of utterance means that the speaker first casts a thought, and then expresses it as a clear utterance. This theory includes the theory of sentences. But it is unrealistic. "A sentence represents an eventuality. An eventuality is an action, or an event, or a state of affairs: something that happens or something that is. The sentence represents an eventuality by separating out the type of eventuality from the abstract and or concrete things which are involved in the eventuality. The type of the eventuality is typically represented by the verb, and the abstract or concrete things involved in the eventuality are prototypically represented by noun phrases. ... Subject is the part on which the action of the sentence is being predicated. Subject may also be called as the person who performs the action in the sentence. Now comes the predicate part which includes verb and complements. Subject of a sentence is the part acting upon the object of the verb. 1) Ram ate mango 2) Peter threw the ball are two good examples of sentence: In the first sentence "Ram" is subject, "mango" is object and "ate mango" is predicate. An utterance is a statement true in grammar but not true in meaning. It is widely being used in auditory communication. In other words, a sentence carries truth, an utterance holds no water. Utterance refers to a word, phrase or sentence expressed by a speaker on a particular occasion. It may or may not carry meaning. Examples of utterance 1. India can win the next football Olympics 2. UK will become monarchy soon. A proposition is as proposal advanced. It is a grammatically correct statement. A proposition is what is expressed by a sentence when that sentence is used to make a statement, that is, to say something, true or false. Literally it means to give a proposal or idea about something. Examples of proposition 1. Yoga should be made compulsory for all youngsters. 2. All students should get up before sunrise. One sentence can contain more than one utterance. Again one sentence can have one or more propositions. An utterance can be composed of a number of sentences. And also, one or more propositions can make an utterance. Example: The child utters: "I am hungry". This actually makes two propositions - 1) "I am hungry" and 2) "I must be given milk." The sentence "I am hungry" is thus an utterance and a preposition. According to Chris Potts "One or more proposition makes

Demand and suppy Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Demand and suppy - Essay Example With regard to the case assignment reading i.e. "What is Driving Oil Prices?" by Richard G. Anderson and Jason J. Buol, it is observed that in the period of August 2004, according to the observation of the International Energy Agency, global oil demand had been rising faster in comparison with any other phase in the previous 16 years. A key reason behind such hike in demand is the quick economic expansion of a number of nations in particular China. Moreover, China had accounted for around 40% of the demand growth regarding global oil production in the period of early 2000s and this demand had been expected to augment rapidly. With regard to supply, it can be said that issues such as political conflicts in nations like Iraq and Venezuela have had a major effect on the fluctuation of oil prices. Contextually, as per the assessment made, it is determined that factors such as enhanced speculation can be a major aspect in affecting oil prices (Anderson and Buol, "What is Driving Oil Price s?"). Both the demand & supply of oil are comparatively inflexible in the short run period. Changes in price have modest impact on either the ââ¬Ëquantity suppliedââ¬â¢ or the ââ¬Ëquantity demandedââ¬â¢. ... Meanwhile as the quantities demanded as well as supplied change very less as the prices rise & fall, both the curves are reasonably vertical as shown below: Figure 1: Elasticity and Prices Source: (Stonebraker, ââ¬Å"Demand and Supply Applied: Oil Pricesâ⬠) Due to the reason that quantities are reasonably fixed in the short run period, any alteration in supply or demand will bring about considerable extent of changes in price. For example, if it is assumed that supply has fallen, the reduced supply generates a short-term shortage that will begin to boost price. If demand is elastic, only a small hike in price will be needed to get consumers to cut their purchases to as much as necessary in order to meet the new lowered output. Nonetheless, in the oil industry if demand is inelastic, it will assume a much greater price escalation to create the required reduction in quantity necessitated (Stonebraker, ââ¬Å"Demand and Supply Applied: Oil Pricesâ⬠). 2a. EXPLAIN WHAT HAPPENS TO QUANTITY OF OIL DEMANDED WHEN THE PRICE OF OIL DECREASES, ASSUMING THAT THE SUPPLY DOESNââ¬â¢T CHANGE. Quantity demanded generally refers to a definite amount that will be demanded each unit of related time at a specific price, if other aspects remain fixed. Market equilibrium is a condition where demand and supply for a certain product matches. The price and quantity only remains fixed at the point of interaction of the demand and supply curve. In accordance with the question, it can be stated that if the price of oil falls then the quantity of oil demanded will definitely surge as oil is a price sensitive product and its demand stands always higher. In terms of movement of curve, it can be said that the curve will shift to the right. The effect of the above

Macbeth Essay -- essays research papers
à à à à à To what extent is Macbeth responsible for his actions? à à à à à Whose Fault Is It? à à à à à In the play Macbeth, Macbethââ¬â¢s actions are cold blooded and are done out of ambition and greed. For example, he killed King Duncan because he wanted to be the king of Scotland. He also hired murderers to kill Banquo and his son Fleance because they stood in his way of becoming king. Only Macbeth was responsible for his deeds, however, the witches, and Lady Macbeth also played key roles in influencing Macbethââ¬â¢s actions. à à à à à During Macbethââ¬â¢s first encounter with the three witches, he learns that he has been appointed Thane of Cawdor, and that he will be the king; but, he also knows that if he is to become the king, a few people will have to die. After thinking about it, he decides that if he is going to become the king he will let it happen naturally. His decision changes, however, once he talks to Lady Macbeth. When Lady Macbeth hears Macbethââ¬â¢s story, she wants him to kill Duncan so that they can become king and queen. At first, he does not want to kill Duncan, but then Lady Macbeth questions his manhood ââ¬Å"When you durst do it, then you were a man; / And, to be more than you were, you would / be so much more the manâ⬠(I, vii, 49-51). She tells Macbeth that she would kill her own child to have a chance like this ââ¬Å" I have given suck, and know / how tender ââ¬Ëtis to love the babe that milks me:...
